SENIOR PROPERTY TAX RELIEF LEGISLATION RELEASED FAVORABLY FROM COMMITTEE
Baddour bill would provide flexibility to seniors in need
March 22, 2006, Boston, MA — Senator Steven A. Baddour (D-Methuen) announced today that the Joint Committee on Revenue has released his senior tax bill, which would provide property tax relief to countless seniors in need, with a favorable recommendation. The legislation is now ready to be considered by the full legislature in hopes of securing its passage before the session ends this summer.
The bill, which requires local approval, would give any citizen over 65 an exemption from property tax increases granted he or she enters into a tax deferral program. By providing added flexibility, especially to seniors with limited resources, legislators hope to eliminate yearly concerns that an unanticipated rise in taxes could lead to financial ruin.
“No senior should have to wonder, year in and year out, if new taxes will cripple their finances and their family,” commented Senator Baddour. “I think, ultimately, the bill strikes a good balance between maintaining personal responsibility and giving seniors just enough leeway to make ends meet, which is the least they deserve for a lifetime devoted to family and community.”
