Progress continues for Amesbury Transportation Center

August 9, 2010 – Castagna Construction of Newburyport has been named the general contractor for the Amesbury Transportation Center being built by the Merrimack Valley Rapid Transit Authority, State Representative Michael A. Costello and State Senator Steven A. Baddour announced.
The $5.8 million project is expected to create more than 100 jobs, and will be paid for using a combination of state, town, federal and federal stimulus funds.
“The transportation center will be an economic asset for Amesbury, creating new opportunities for local businesses,” said Representative Costello. “I am also very pleased that the building will be home to the Amesbury Senior Center. I know that our seniors have been looking for a vibrant place to call home, and I am confident that this location will meet their needs. I look forward to celebrating when construction is complete.”
The construction of the transportation center is expected to begin on August 14 and to last 18 months. In addition to transportation infrastructure for the MVRTA, the building will house town facilities, including the Amesbury Senior Center, the Health and Human Services Department and Amesbury Veteran Affairs.
“The transportation center will be a focal point in downtown Amesbury and will help contribute to the renewal of the Lower Millyard,” said Senator Baddour. “Multi-use transportation centers like this one provide our communities with important infrastructure and serve as an engine for future economic growth.”
Representative Costello and Senator Baddour also acknowledged the strong support of Congressman John Tierney and Amesbury Mayor Thatcher Kezer in creating a partnership to help bring the Amesbury Transportation Center to fruition.
