Newburyport to Receive State Loans for Water Plant Improvements

May 26, 2010 – The City of Newburyport has received an $8 million award from the State Revolving Loan Fund to improve the city’s water treatment facility and water distribution network, Representative Michael A. Costello and Senator Steven A. Baddour announced today.

The Spring Lane Treatment Facility was built in 1971, and much of the equipment there is in desperate need of renovation, Newburyport Mayor Donna Holaday said.

The state’s revolving fund provides cities and towns with low-interest loans that save money on borrowing costs for capital projects. Newburyport received $8 million through the DrinkingWater program for the upgrade of its water treatment facility and distribution system.

“The ratepayers of Newburyport will benefit directly from these SRF funds both through lower costs and better service,” said Representative Costello. “We are helping to lay the infrastructure that will serve the city for many years to come. I think it’s a testament to the quality of this project and the hard work of the city officials that the city received this funding.”

“During these difficult budget times, this award goes a long way towards improving Newburyport’s drinking water infrastructure,” said Senator Steven A. Baddour. “This plant is vital to the long-term economic and residential growth of this region.”
