State, City and Sheriff Team Up to Clean Up Newburyport Gateway

NEWBURYPORT (May 10, 2010) – The launch of The Newburyport Route 1 Gateway and Clipper City Rail Trail Clean-Up Project will be announced tomorrow by State Representative Michael A. Costello, State Senator Steven A. Baddour, Newburyport Mayor Donna Holaday and Essex County Sheriff Frank G Cousins Jr.

The group will meet at 2 p.m. at Route 1 and Merrimac Street, behind Mr. India restaurant, to discuss the details of the project.

With the opening of the Clipper City Rail trail and the painting of the Andrew J. Gillis Bridge, adjacent areas like the Route 1 entrance ramps, Cashman Park, Winter Street and Summer Street are in need of beautification. The cleanup project will include new safety and directional signage, extensive brush removal, sweeping, raking, and pressure washing.

“As the summer tourist season begins, this project will ensure that Newburyport is well-prepared to welcome visitors to the city,” said State Representative Michael A. Costello. “The Clipper City Rail Trail has already proven to be tremendously popular and should be a great attraction this summer. People who come to Newburyport to see the waterfront and shop downtown will see the difference from this cleanup effort. I want to thank Sheriff Frank Cousins and Patricia Leavenworth, District 4 Director for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, for partnering with us on this project.”

“With the help of Sheriff Cousins and MassDOT, this clean-up project will ensure the Route 1 Gateway and the Clipper City Rail Trail will be a safe, attractive and vibrant public space for residents and visitors to enjoy”, said Senator Steven A. Baddour.

The cleanup project is expected to last 10 days, and should be completed in time for the opening of the rail trail on May 23.

“With my work crews and staff, I am happy to collaborate with the state and the city on this project to make the bike path and surrounding areas more beautiful,” said Sheriff Frank G. Cousins Jr. “I hope everyone gets lots of use and enjoyment from it.”
